READ & LEARN

A first golf lesson.

It is never too late to start, and it is a lovely excuse to spend four hours outside with friends.

A first golf lesson.

Golf has a reputation for being intimidating. It does not have to be. Plenty of women pick up a club for the first time at 50, and many of them wish they had started sooner.

Take a lesson before you buy anything

Most clubs and driving ranges offer beginner lessons, often women-only. The pro will lend you clubs and tell you what you actually need, which is far less than the shop suggests.

Buy one thing first

A good glove. It helps your grip and saves your hands while you practice.

Start with nine holes

Or start on the putting green. Short games are less pressure, take less time and leave room for lunch.

Read one book

Harvey Penick's little red book of lessons has been the gentle teacher of generations of golfers. It reads like letters from a wise friend.

Wouldn't it be fun to plan a golf weekend with friends somewhere beautiful? Terrains & Tides can plan it.
